Mammal Hair
in
Baltic Amber

I
know you are going to think this impossible. But there is a large
tuft of hair in this specimen of amber. Not only is it practically
impossible to find hair in amber, but it is impossible to find it
for sale! This is an extremely rare and valuable piece of amber. Now
what type of hair, I do not know. But I can tell you this: the hair
is about 45 million year old, and was found in the Baltic area.

I
wonder what the animal was and how it lost
its hair. I can imagine a tree dweller getting some hair caught
in the resin and having it yanked out as it moved from the one place
to another. This specimen is about 1 inch x .6 inches x .25
inches. This is the crowning glory to any large collection of amber.
I just cannot impress upon you strongly enough how
rare this is - and further, it is in Baltic amber.

There
is also a dark winged fungus gnat, Diptera, Sciaridae, in the hair
mass. I do not feel it has anything to do with the hair, other than
to be trapped at the same time the hair was caught.
